Archaeological research in area of the washmills

The area of the washmills is bisected by the path which runs into the reserve from the Lower Rainham Road entrance. To the east of this path lies the pair of washmills and numerous other concrete and brick structures, whilst to the west lies the mounting blocks for the ball-mills and the remains of the engine house

The research into the area commenced with a survey of all visible items to the east of the path. A scale plan of these can be found at item 1 below. It was then decided that, in order to investigate the area before it was again taken over by the spring and summer vegetation growth, effort would be concentrated on clearing the accumulated detritus from the floor of the engine house, which lies to the west of the ball-mill mounting blocks

A record of this work is being maintained and will be published here as it is updated
