I lived in Berengrave Lane as a child, moving away from the area in 1966. We used to collect newts in the chalk pit ( which seems dreadful as they are now protected and relatively rare) keeping them in fishtanks or bowls to watch. We did return them to the wild though - if they survived. I also remember two boys proudly showing off a dead fox which they had killed in the pit, carrying it on their 'soap-box' cart, and I recall feeling sad at the destruction of such a beautiful animal. I visited a friend in the area last summer and had a walk in the now Berengrave LNR and was very impressed at the result of the hard work and dedication of those who have made this lovely little reserve such a wonderful resource for both wildlife and people. The website is also easy to navigate, interesting and informative. I'm happy that, thanks to this work, many children will understand and appreciate their local natural treasure so much better than we did. Bravo!

EmailI am very impressed with the Web site and the wealth of information about the reserve. A good management plan.

EmailI grew up in a house on the back of the woods, right next to what was a field for horses, approximately 1989.
Had many happy times playing in the woods and swinging from tree vines as a youngster.
Would love to re-visit the place sometime.

EmailSpend many days in the Chalk pit as a kid. Up to no good. Caught a bunch of fish by hand. Also stickle backs and newts. They lived in our home pond for many years.
